Sunlight breaks down the surface of bare timber. Rain then washes the loose fibres away, and the boards turn grey and rough. Left longer, timber can dry out and crack.
The grey layer has to come off before a new coat goes on. We clean the deck, then sand it back to sound timber, so the oil or stain soaks in evenly.
Decking oil soaks into the timber and shows the natural grain. Stain adds colour while the grain still shows through. Deck paint forms a solid film that covers the grain completely.

Late winter and early spring. August and September are Brisbane's driest months, with about 46mm of rain each, against about 140 to 160mm a month from January to March (Bureau of Meteorology averages). Oil and stain need dry weather to soak in.
