A feature wall lets you use a strong colour without painting the whole room in it. Dark colours such as charcoal, olive and deep green are often used on one wall, with lighter walls around it. Light changes a colour through the day, so check a sample on the wall in the morning and the evening.

Dark colours absorb more heat than light ones. On timber cladding, that heat makes the boards expand and contract more, which is harder on the paint. A light body colour with darker trims or one darker section is a common choice.
